What Should You Pay Attention to When Choosing a Camping Cot?
There is an array of camping cots available on the market, and although their purpose is the same, they are different in many aspects. For this reason, I have comprised a short guide that will lead you through all the important features you should consider before buying one.
This is probably the most important consideration as the frame holds the entire structure and accounts for the durability but also portability of a camping cot. A torn or worn out fabric can be replaced, but a broken frame is quite a serious problem that sometimes cannot be resolved.
The frame needs to be lightweight, but not at the cost of its sturdiness. The frame and joints have to be made of thick material. Typically, frames are made from aluminum as it is both strong and light.
There are also heavy-duty frames which are made from steel and can withstand heavier weight load without bending or collapsing.
Manufacturers always state the weight rating of their camping cots, so make sure the cot you are buying is appropriate for your weight.
Another thing to consider when observing the cot’s frame is leg style. Camping cots can feature vertical legs, X legs, and a C shape.legs connected by a horizontal bar. Military style X legs are more appropriate for indoor use and are mostly characteristic for cheaper cots.
My personal recommendation is to make sure that the cot legs have rubber end caps, especially if you plan to use them in tents as they could otherwise damage the floor of a tent.
A second most important consideration when it comes to camping cots is fabric they are made from. Typically, modern cots are made of either nylon or polyester. These fabrics are durable and easy to clean but also provide the necessary support.
More expensive cots feature a long-lasting “ripstop” fabric which resists tearing. Cotton fabric is also used, but I do not recommend it as it adds weight to the cot and gets dirty and stained easily.
The fabric used for cots is rated in Denier or ”D”. High Denier stands for high quality and strength. When it comes to camping cots, I recommend choosing at least 600D rating.
3. Comfort and Body Support
The most comfortable cots come with extra padding, but they are heavier, larger and harder to transport. It is, therefore, better to use camping pad for extra cushioning.
The most uncomfortable cots are those which feature badly positioned crossbars right under your back.
Body support depends on fabric tension and spring systems. The best cots feature adjustable tension systems which allow you to dial in your level of support and comfort or relocate the supports to your liking.
Standard dimensions of an open cot are roughly 25 inches wide and 75 inches long. Longer models for taller people are also available, as well as shorter ones for kids. There are also heavy-duty models that support more weight and are typically wider (up to 40 inches).
When buying, make sure that cot fits your height and weight I recommend that you allow for a few inches to spare. The height of the cot should also be considered.
The dimensions of a packed cot are also essential as they account for its portability and ease of transport.
I recommend that you measure the available space in your trunk or the back of your car to make sure the cot will fit, also consider the space you will need to store it in your home or garage.
Firstly, consider the weight of the cot-the lighter the cot. The easier it will be to carry and transport, but it might not be as durable. An average, aluminum cot weighs from 15 to 20 pounds. Secondly, consider your own weight and the weight capacity of the cot.,
All camping cots are portable, yet some are more convenient for transport than others. This is influenced by the size of the packed cot and its weight.
Cots can be folded over into small sections or completely disassembled. The weight can be as little as 2 pounds, but these ultra light cots often lack durability, have a low weight capacity and have short legs.
I also recommend buying cot with a carrying bag with shoulder straps that will make transportation even easier.
7. Ease Of Assembly
The cot should be easy to set up and pack. Most cots just unfold and snap into place. However, somerequire assembly similar to setting up a tent. I have only one advice - buy one that does not require tools to setup.
You know your budget the best, but I recommend investing a bit more money and buying a quality cot - of course reasonably priced. It will serve you better, provide better comfort and last longer than the cheap models.
Modern camping cots can feature various accessories such as storage pockets or side tables. Some even have mosquito netting. These are certainly useful additions but usually, raise the cost.
Best Camping Cots Currently Available
#1 Coleman 2000020273 - The Best Camping Cot
Coleman 2000020273 is 80-inch long, 44-inch wide and 17-inch high camping cot that offers 32-inch wide sleeping space.
The dimensions of a folded cot are 40.2-inch x 5.9-inch x 5.9-inch It weighs 21 lbs. together with its carry bag and can support up to 300 lbs. of weight. It is suitable for persons whose height does not exceed 6.6 feet.
The cot features a steel frame which makes it very heavy-duty and durable, but also adds a lot of weight and hinders its portability.
As it is too heavy to carry around easily and can fit in few cabin tents, it is not suitable for short camping trips.
I would rather use it as an extra bed in a cottage, cabin or a summer house. The polyester fabric provides adequate support and is easy to clean.
I like the side table and cup holder and the fact that it can be set on either side of the cot and easily folded down when not used.
The only thing that has made me a bit wary is the fact that the legs do not lock open, but I have not experienced any problems yet.
Do make sure that they are spread out fully though. Sleeping has been quite comfortable, even without added cushioning.
- Reasonable price and 1-year warranty
- Suitable for people with extra weight
- Practical design of the side table
- Heavy frame- limited portability
- Legs do not lock
#2 Coleman 2000020271 ComfortSmart Cot - The Second Best Camping Cot
Coleman 2000020271 ComfortSmart is 69 in. long and 25 in. wide when unfolded. The height from the ground is 15 in. It easily folds in half, and folded dimensions are 34.3 in. X 25.4 in. X 5.5 in, which means it can fit in most car trunks.
It is 14 pounds heavy and can handle up to 275 pounds of weight. This cot is suitable for persons 5.5 ft. tall, although advertised for a bit taller people.
Heavy-duty steel frame supports polyester fabric and a 100% polyurethane foam mattress on top.
The mattress cannot be secured and tends to move around as the person lying on it changes positions, which can be rather annoying.
The mattress and frame fold down together, and Velcro tabs are there to hold the cot folded. However, Velcro tabs are not very effective, and the cot often opens up enough to form V-shape, which might be a problem in tight spaces.
I would recommend this product for the extra comfort and ease of assembly. It is fairly easy to set up as you just open it up until you hear the sound of legs locking into the position and you are good to go.
Price is acceptable, and you get a 1-year warranty as a bonus too.
- Good price and quality ratio
- Mattress allows for extra comfort
- Easy setup
- Mattress cannot be secured in position
- Velcro tabs are too weak
#3 Coleman Trailhead II Cot
This is yet another Coleman camping cot worth mentioning for its quality but also highly affordable price.
For almost half the price of other cots reviewed, it has proven to serve its purpose successfully as it is very portable and supportive enough to sleep on.
When unfolded, it is 76 in. long, 25 in. wide and 13 in. high; long enough to fit a person up to 6 ft. tall and 300 lbs. heavy. The packed dimensions are 40.2 in. x 7.9 in. x 3.9 in, which makes it very compact and easy to store or transport in most car trunks.
For such a low price it features a surprisingly sturdy dual-cross-bar steel frame and strong and easy to clean polyester fabric.
On the downside, it weighs 18 pounds which makes it unsuitable for destinations that would require to carry it long, although it does come with a practical and sturdy carrying bag.
I also recommend adding some sort of cushioning if you hope for any comfort.
The assembly requires a lot of strength especially when it comes to attaching the last horizontal support bar.
This is a basic cot, for those who have low comfort expectations, and a limited budget.
- Low price
- Compact when folded
- Durable frame
- Heavy to carry
- Difficult to assemble
#4 Magshion Military Camping Cot

- Portable Cot With A Quick And Easy Fold Up Design(included Free Bag)

Last update on 2018-03-08 PST - Details
Magshion Military Camping Cot is another option I highly recommend to those on a tight budget, or those who are not going to use the cot very often.
This camping cot is 72 in. long, 24.5 in. wide and 13.5 in. high when unfolded, and when packed its dimensions are 36" x 24.5" x 4.5". It is fairly lightweight as it weighs only 8 pounds- this makes it very portable and easy to carry.
Magshion cot is suitable for persons up to 6 ft. tall, and can support 300 lbs. of weight- enough to hold an average sized person.
Beware though that there is not a lot of space to turn around, which is perhaps better since every movement on this cot produces a lot of noise which could disturb light sleepers.
It is, however, a great cot for the price and appears to be sturdy and well made with a steel frame, Oxford Cloth fabric and a dust bag to protect it when stored.
It is very compact and easy to set up and fold down too.
If you have reasonable expectations, you will be more than satisfied with this cot I am sure.
- Dustbag for protection
- Easy setup
- Noisy when person on it moves
- Not very spacious or comfortable
#5 TETON Sports Outfitter XXL - The Highest Quality Camping Cot with High Price
If money is no issue you can go all out and afford a really high-end camping cot; in this case, I recommend buying TETON Sports Outfitter XXL.
Although the most expensive option, it is also a camping cot that will provide you with the most comfort and offer other advantages plus a lifetime warranty.
First of all, when unfolded this cot is 85 in. long, 40 in. wide and 19 in. high and can handle up to 600 lbs. of weight which makes it the largest reviewed and suitable for extra tall or heavy persons.
If you are an average-sized person this cot will provide you with enough space to sleep in any position- just as you would in your bed at home, or share the space with someone special.
The cot weighs 26 lbs. and when packed its dimensions are 42" x 12" x 7", which means it can be transported but is not convenient for carrying over large distances.
It features a high-quality aluminum frame with steel legs, 600 D poly canvas coated fabric in black color and a practical carry bag. It is compatible with other Outfitter camping equipment- but you need to spend even more money to enjoy these accessories.
I do recommend buying the pad though. There is a strong odor when you use it for the first time- but it airs out quickly.
- Limited Lifetime Warranty
- Rubber feet
- Unfolds in 30 seconds
- Extra-long and wide
- Rubbery smell
- No accessories included in the price
- Thin canvas
Why Buy a Camping Cot?
As I have already stated, camping cots are an ideal solution for anyone who likes to spend time outdoors.
Camping is fun, but it also includes a lot of physical work. You will need to set up a camping spot, gather some woods for a camping fire, probably do some hiking and so on. The obvious point I am trying to make is clear- you will get tired pretty quickly; this is where the camping cots come handy.
Camping cots will enable you to rest, take a nap, or sleep the entire night quite comfortably, but most importantly elevated off the ground.
In this manner, any place will be comfortable enough for sleeping- even rocky or moist terrain. Camping cots also help avoid the creepy crawlers often found in nature.
Another advantage of sleeping on the camping cot is that it will help regulate the body’s temperature. You will not have to lay on a cold ground which would sap away your body heat at night. In the summer, camping cots also help you stay cool by allowing air to circulate freely above and below you.
In any case, camping cots are a valuable addition to your camping equipment at your camping trips, especially for longer camping experience during which you need to spend more than a few nights out.
You can use them in a tent, or as an extra bed in a camper or a cottage, but I recommend that you use them outside and count the stars before sleeping whenever the weather allows it- that is an ultimate outdoor experience!

However, I give a slight advantage to Coleman 2000020273 as it balances the price and quality the best. It features a heavy-duty frame, strong fabric, can take quite a lot of weight and even comes with a side table and cup holder so that you can enjoy a cold drink and a good book- what else could you wish for?
